Who is a Good Teacher

Since two years of Post Graduation,I am in Academics. I asked a very respected personality, what are the traits of a good teacher. He answered " TEACHERS ARE TORCH BEARER". St. Kabir has very beautifully depicted about a teacher
" GURU GOBIND DONO KHADE KAKE LAGU PAY
BALIHARI GURU AAPKI GURU GOBIND DIYO BATAY"

In Sanskrit, teacher has been pictured as "GURU" which literally means a disspeller of darkness or one who shows the path of Light from dark ( tamaso ma jyotirgamay). These definitions are, how far have been justified by the faculties with their interest in teaching and research; is an aspect to be thought of. I have seen many teachers during school and college days who either used to sleep in the class or were not showing any interest in the teaching. If at all they were forced to teach, then they used to make us read us lessons, but never make us to understand. Tell me should we think of such great !!!!!!!!!!! one as our idol?

When I entered in College, I realized that some teachers are really dedicated to their profession. They go out of their way to help the students in every manner. Subsequently students are also devoted to their committment too. But since past two years, scenario has changed. Teachers are neither creative nor students are committed to their work and profession. In this context, how a teacher can be a torch bearer or a GURU in real sense?

Can you please opine me, how to be a torch bearer?

Hey Bhuvan,

You really write great columns. This column made me think that "who is really a good teacher?" I guess in today's fast world really most of the students as well as teachers are not paying attention to the importance of education, rather they just want to finish their curriculum and move ahead in life, students just study for the sake of studying while teachers because they are getting salary do their job of teaching, most of them might not be seriously interested in teaching the subject to the depth. But there are I guess small percentage of teachers who are dedicated to their profession, who want their students to study seriously and work hard in life.

I guess we ourselves are good teachers of ourselves, because today no one can judge us better than ourselves. Being a student we should know our responsibilities and should work hard to attain our goal in life, learn our subject to the depth and make our basics clear and strong. Being a teacher we should know that we are the ones who will give knowledge to the coming generation and will mould the career of the students and will make them responsible citizens of our country.

If we say he/she is a teacher it means he is a teacher by profession.
Teacher by profession doesn't means he/she is a teacher in real sense too.
when i say that i mean a teacher is the most important person on the world.
The first friend of yours in a school is a teacher.teacher is the one who molds your careers and is an major factor in making our personality.
Die hard teachers that we had in our school are the reason of such a competitive nature of our group and the reason we still say , i have done it in past and can do that now too.
The thing you pointed out in your blog is about doing justice to your profession, is about duties ,is about professionalisms.
In fact i also don't blame them fully for their attitude. The reason being they were never being questioned.
Every individual need to be questioned for what he is doing and what he is supposed to be doing, unless until that is the case there won't be the ways of improvement.
Sometimes when a person take the jobs and responsibilities for granted these things happens.
well can write pages on this topic but would just say the last point as my conclusion.
